A Syrian Town in the 1930s through the Eyes of Danish Archaeologists
Volume number 18 of the series Proceedings of the Danish Institute in Damascus.
The large mound in the town of Hama is well known in Syrian archaeology for the excavations there by a Danish team in the 1930s. However, in addition to their archaeological investigations that were mainly undertaken on the mound, the Danes also documented the town around the mound at that time. The photographs, architectural plans, and water colours that make up this archive, many of which have not been previously published, are a priceless record of a place and a time that no longer exist. Rare, gritty photos of bustling city life are interspersed with strictly composed artwork, where the past appears in vivid colour. However, behind the façade of this picturesque town, forces were at play to change the political and social fabric of Syria for ever.
